Compare how extreme emotions are portrayed in the protagonists of Macbeth and A Christmas Carol.

In the opening of Macbeth, Macbeth’s emotions portrayed in a positive way. He is described as a hero and loved by everyone. He is the thane of Glamis because he saved his people by defeating enemies in a battle. This gave him a high status made him known and also made him a respected person. At this stage in the story his emotions are full of excitement and happiness. He feels powerful and he feels he has made a great accomplishment by becoming thane of Glamis.

On the other hand. In the opening of A Christmas Carol, Scrooge is portrayed in the opposite way. He is hated in his town and known for his miserableness. Scrooge is shown as a person that dislikes communicating with others and does not like having fun. “I wish to be left alone”. this shows his personality and that he wants to be alone as always. It also creates a sense of loneliness and shows that he is uses to being alone. Scrooge is also described as a careless person. this is shown when the charity workers come to collect money for poor people on Christmas and Scrooge says that he wants the poor to die. “If they would rather die, they had better do it, and decrease the surplus population”. Scrooge is also known to be rich. This shows he is stingy, selfish and rude. I think this because he has money but does not want to give it and also he is rude and careless because he said he wants the poor to die so the pollution reduces, which is also a benefit to him. At this stage of the story his emotions are moody, dull and he thinks he can do what he wants because he has power.

As the play goes on, Macbeth’s wife persuades him that the only way he will become king is if the current king dies, and Macbeth must do it. This creates more confusion for Macbeth because his wife is urging by attacking his manliness. “live a coward in thine own esteem”. She is saying he will be a coward if he does not kill king Duncan. This forces Macbeth to kill the king. In the scene his emotions are getting worse because he came from killing enemies and saving his people and now he is going to kill his king. this creates a sense of fear bnecause if he does not do it his wife will be upset, but if he does do it he will become a murderer.

flaws

In the openings of both stories, Macbeth and A Christmas Carol, Scrooge and Macbeth have very different flaws. Macbeth’s flaws are positive because he has just won the battle and he is loved by the whole town and he is called a hero. “O valiant cousin! Worthy gentleman!” Macbeth is being praised by his best friend for winning the battle. Banquo is calling Macbeth his cousin because he is proud to be close to him and he is proud for Macbeth’s fame and he gets some of the fame as well because they are very very close friends. He is a strong and brave and saved the town. Macbeth is presented like this in the beginning of the play to show that the whole town loved him and he was a “hero” for winning the battle and saving the king and everyone else.

Scrooge’s flaws are totally opposite as he is hated by the whole town because he is such a selfish person and doesn’t care about anyone else at all. When they charity workers come to him and ask for money for the people dying on Christmas day he says “if they’d rather die, they had better do it”. He is very wealthy, but very stingy. When someone uses the word die it in a bad way it makes you think of them as a nasty and awful person for telling someone to die. This shows that he didn’t care about anyone and was a miserable person and told the charity workers to leave. Dickens presented Scrooge like this very early in the story because he wanted to show the readers the character of Scrooge right from the start.

As the stories go on Macbeth has an encounter with three witches. When he sees the witches his flaws are negative because he frightened of them. The three witches tell him and Banquo things that will happen in their future. The witches say that Macbeth will become king and Banquo’s children will also be kings one day. “Thou shalts get kings, though thou be none;” Macbeth and Banquo are confused about what the witches said to them. When the witches vanish Macbeth says to Banquo “Your children shall be kings” and Banquo says to Macbeth “you shall be king”. They are both confused because if Macbeth is king then Banquo’s children cannot become king. The thane of Cawdor is still alive. This means the current king must die for Macbeth to become king. “Stay, you imperfect speakers, tell me more”. Macbeth wants to know more about being king because he doesn’t know whether it’s true or not. Macbeth’s flaws are now much higher because a witch has just told him he will become the Thane of Cawdor. He’s excited, confused and scared at the same time. Scrooges flaws were very negative as the story goes on because he sees the ghosts of Christmas past and he is petrified. He sees Marley’s ghost and all the other ghost that used to work in the same place as Scrooge. Marley’s ghost talks to Scrooge about wasting his life and that he should just be happy and celebrate Christmas.

Dear Ms Samantha Taylor,

I am writing to you about your article where you are describing teenagers and social networking in a negative way. The way your authors are presenting teenagers is very unconsidered and I disagree with most of the statements that you are making. Your article mainly talks about social networking and how it’s ruining teenagers’ lives and enslaving them. You don’t talk about the positive things about teenagers and social networking.

I strongly disagree with the statement, “Too much socialising online amongst teenagers has created a generation who can’t relate face to face”. You are saying that all teenagers are like this, but this is not true. Most of the time, children that socialise a lot online are confident face to face, whereas people that don’t socialise online may be more likely to be shy. You also insist that all teenagers like this. This is wrong because not all teenagers are like this and many of them have great self-confidence face to face and on social networks.
Social networking has many uses; it is used for talking with friends, family and adults; it connects people that have family abroad. it can also stop teenagers from feeling isolated and alone by creating a community online that is there for everyone at any time of the day. It gives teenagers privacy and control over their lives, which is something they would never have without social networking.
Furthermore, you state that, “Facebook has turned teenagers into screen enslaved inadequates”. These days teenagers do not use Facebook as much as they used to. Apps like Whatsapp, Instagram and Snapchat are much more popular. I wonder why you have made these assumptions? Maybe you are a bit out of touch.

Recent evidence has shown that approximately 92% of teenagers, go on-line daily and 56% go on-line several times a day’. The data from different sources vary but the most important thing is that this shows how important a smartphone or computer is to a teenagers daily life. It is their everything.

Furthermore, some teenagers feel lonely because they have no friends or get bullied in school. social networking can help them to build their confidence and can also give them some friends to talk to. There was a situation where a friend of mine from primary school was getting bullied when he first started secondary school in year 7. He did not have any friends and was too scared to talk to people because he had fear of getting laughed at. He started using social media sites more often and made many friends online. this built his confidence dramatically. Once he got to year 8 he had the confidence to start talking to people even if they would still laugh at him he had learnt to ignore it.

The poem ‘at the border’ is about an innocent girl at the border of her country with her family. They were forced to leave their country because there was a civil war going on in their country. “I can inhale home” Now they are going back to their hometown. “our mothers were crying” I think they were crying because they were happy and excited to be going back home because they haven’t been there in a very long time. “a man bent down and kissed his muddy homeland” this shown how much he missed his homeland and how much he wanted to get back home.

out of the blue

Out of the blue reflection

This poem is written in first person from the perspective of a man that is in a burning building in the 9/11 terrorist attack on the twin towers. In the quote “you have picked me out” the speaker directly speaks to someone that is at a distance through the second person pronoun ‘you’. He starts the poem in second person because he wants the person to help him. This shows he is desperate because he starts of with a pronoun and that shows how desperate he it to get saved.

How has the structural choices made by the poet enhanced our understanding of the theme?

This poem is about a hawk that thinks he is the best, he is arrogant and thinks he is the most powerful. He is hunting for its prey and he is looking down at everything from a high tree. This is what makes him think he is powerful. The purpose of the poem is to compare how mankind is similar to the hawk because humans also act like this and think they are the most powerful.

The hawk thinks it is the most powerful because it is looking down on everything and everyone and it’s about to attack its prey. This is similar to what humans do.

There are six stanzas in the whole poem and each stanza has four lines. I think this is trying to show how the hawk is and how it speaks.

come on, come back

Vaudevue is alone sitting on a round flat stone at midnight. “She is alone at midnight in the moonlight she is sitting alone on a round flat stone”. The poet has repeated the word ‘alone’. This shows that the poet is trying to emphasise the word and trying to tell the reader that vaudevue is alone “Her fingers tap the ground”, this shows that she is on the ground or must have fell on the ground.

I know this poem is from the future because there is some sort of chemical that wiped vaudevue’s memory and this chemical is called M.L.5. this chemical does not exist so this shows it hasn’t been made yet so it is from the future. Repetition creates sadness because she alone. “she is alone at midnight” , “ she is sitting alone”.

Persuasive speech – Against Exams

Exams are very hard and most people don’t like it and would prefer coursework. Exams are the most stressful part of education. You have to spend week after week studying over everything you’ve learnt so far, not missing anything because it might be on the test, absolutely stressed out, only for you to have a stressed-induced blank out on the day and screw it up horribly. Sure, some students can study a bit a day before the exam and come out with an A, but not everyone works like that. This isn’t reflecting a student’s knowledge, it’s gambling their grades on how well their memory holds up under pressure.

In the UK, you need a pass in English and maths GCSE to get a job. But the government have made it so hard to get a pass a lot of people are unable to get jobs and the government say people are wasting their lives just sitting at home or doing crimes and other illegal things. However, the government doesn’t understand that it’s their fault for making us do exams. Exams are extremely stressful and it has been said on the news that many people suffer from mental illnesses because of the stress and pressure from exams.

Callum, aged 16, now in sixth form was doing his GCSE’s last year. He said he really struggled with memorising all the maths formulas, all the English techniques and science. He felt like giving up and didn’t want to do any of his GCSE’s anymore, so he had to go to a place where they work on calming people and work on people that are stressed. This did help him quite a bit but he still was stressed and still felt like giving up because his parents kept saying if he doesn’t get a B-A* grade in all his GCSE’s. They said they will not accept a C grade. Here is what Cullum said to me, “GCSE’s where extremely hard, I felt like giving up, it was as if I was having some kind of mental breakdown, I didn’t know what to do. My whole family was expecting me to get better grades than my older brother. I felt much stressed. The pressure was just too much. I needed help so I went to a place where they gave me help. I worked on calming down when I was stressed and it did help me a lot, but it still didn’t stop my parents from pressuring me.

With coursework, you get time to work on it and you get a few lessons to write it up and you can also use notes when you write up the coursework. Whereas exams are completely different. In exams all you have is your memory. You have to remember everything you have learnt since you started school. Exams are ridiculous. Some people have better memory than others so exams are unfair on people that have bad memory. Some people also have illnesses or disabilities so there should be a way they can be tested the same as everyone else so it is fair and everyone does the same test and everyone’s treated fairly.

Overall, I think exams should be banned and we should be tested another way and not tested on our memory. We could have a separate memory test. There are many more people in the world that are just like Cullum and we need to do something about it or their lives will be ruined without good grades. As I said, it is almost impossible to get a job in the UK without GCSE’s. These exams need to be banned.

IGCSE writing to describe

It is a glum and gloomy night. Rain patters against the windows, and wind hisses through the gaps. The long hospital hallway is empty. The tapping of the busy shoes of nurses and doctors echoed from another side of the building. Not a single living thing is in sight. All I can hear is the gale whistling through the windows. All the rooms and wards are full of sleeping ill people. Abruptly the dark green curtain of the emergency room rises to a gust of the wind. It reveals two bodies – one a police sergeant who met his fate at the hands of armed robbers , the other of a gymnast who had a broken neck .Both these men were alive just a few minutes ago when they were brought in. Now they are lifeless with their eyes open as if they were trying to fend off an invisible force to prevent it from taking their souls.

Then along comes the sound of familiar footsteps, for it is time for the nurses to make their rounds, and to proceed immediately to the emergency room but are stunned. Personnel and equipment are scrambled immediately in hopes of reviving them. With the defibrillator they exhaust all means; but their efforts are in vain, for the patients are dead.

Two nurses are about to cover the dead bodies with blankets when the nurse sees that the window of the room is open. A bloodied scythe is lying on the floor. She approaches it with caution. Suddenly she sees a blurry vision. The picture slowly clears. She sees blood splattered on the corridor walls. As soon as she turns the corner, she sees a shadow that’s as black as night and whose face is hidden by a hood. The being has body-like figures beside it, and in the nurse’s eyes she sees that which seemed to be their souls wailing out from their once-alive bodies into the being’s hand. Moans and laughter can be heard. Suddenly, fear strangles the nurse. she has a cold feeling rush through her body. goosebumps engolfed her from head to toe, but the blood within her veins was boiling hot. Everything is now silent. The nurse drops to the ground with a thud which echoed through the corridor.

She then wakes up to the slamming of a door. she is surrounded by silence and fear. Slowly, the door opens. I can now see a disgusting scene in my presence, just like the other two patients. The scythe is swept up from the floor by a black figure in a hood, who gazes out the window to see souls marching towards a black whirlpool: the policeman and the gymnast are now beside him, and with an evil laugh they slowly vanish into thin air.

Writing to Describe – IGCSE Coursework

The bully of the school was called Jim. Everyone in the school hated him. Annoying, mean, rude and violent were the words that most people described him as. Jim always picked on me the most. He used to throw things at me in class and at lunch time he would beat me up when no one was looking. I was too scared to tell anyone because he might hurt me even more. Laughing at me, he would push me out the way whenever he walked past me. No one was brave enough do anything to him. He was fat, ugly and smelled like sweat.
There was one time when me and my friend was walking home from school. Suddenly, Jim grabbed my friend, I didn’t know what to do so I just tried to help my friend by pushing Jim away from him and saying “let go of him”, But there was no use because he is much bigger and stronger than me and I knew he would start attacking me as well. I had to live with this for two years and I got used to it. Luckily, after them two years I have seen some of his weaknesses and fears. He is scared of clowns and birds. When a bird comes next to Jim, he would go mad and run away. Further more Jim hates it when people would take his food or mess about with him when he was eating, and most of all, he hates getting wet.
The next day was Friday and I spoke to my friends about Jim. I was thinking about getting revenge on him. At first everyone was too terrified because of his size, but I persuaded them into agreeing with me. During the weekends, I planned ways of getting revenge on Jim. I thought of so many things to do to him but I didn’t know if it would work, and if it didn’t work he would kill me. After a few hours of planning, I decided to put all my plan’s together.
My plan was to put a lot of birds in a cage while he is eating, get my friends to dress up as clowns and get the rest of the school to hide behind a wall. This is how the plan goes: I will slap his food out of his hand so he will start to chase me, then I will tell my friend to open the cage with birds inside it so the birds will fly out next to him. Then he will keep chasing me and I, get some people to throw water balloons at him. After that I will make the clowns jump out from under the bench so he gets scared, and finally I will get the rest of the school to laugh at him, and hopefully he will never bully anyone again.
Today is Wednesday, its the day for us to get revenge on Jim. Everyone is getting prepared to do their part, and I’m getting ready to run for my life. Everyone is in position and Jim is eating him sandwich. As I walk towards him, my bones are quivering, this is the scariest thing I have ever tried to do. The I quickly slapped the sandwich out of his hand, and he screamed. Then he jumped up and started chasing me. Then my friend let the birds out of a cage and the birds flew at him and he ran into a wall, but he still wasn’t giving up and still wanted to get me. Next the water balloons were thrown at him and splashed on his head and he got even more furious. Finally, the clowns jumped out and screamed. Jim started to cry and everyone was laughing at him. Luckily the plan worked and now he will never bully anyone again.
